chickadee, my little
The chickadee is the black-cap titmouse, a North American bird whose note sounds something like ‘chickadee’. ‘My little chickadee’ as a vocative was almost the exclusive property of the American comedian W.C.Fields (1879–1946), a notable eccentric. So closely associated was he with this expression that it became the title of one of his films, released in 1940. Anyone who uses the term normally tries to imitate Field’s characteristic gravel voice while doing so.
